Pregnant
women have complex needs as they transition into motherhood. Doulas
offer a woman important information, continuous reassurance, comfort,
compassion, encouragement and respect.
In a study published in June of 2008, researchers found that the continuous presence of a doula during labor decreased the chances of receiving a cesarean section and reduced the need for an epidural. Just over half of the 420 women selected to participate in the study received doula support during labor and birth. Only 13.4% of the doula-supported group required cesarean section compared to 25% of the control group, and epidural rates were also lower for the doula group (64.7% vs. 76%).

Numerous clinical studies have found that a doula's presence at birth results in shorter labors with fewer complications. Women who give birth with a doula's support have greater self confidence, greater success with breastfeeding, less postpartum depression and fewer negative feelings about their childbirth experience.
What do I do for my clients? During our first meeting, we will get to know each other and discuss your vision of your birth. Have you taken a childbirth education class? Are you planning a natural birth? How does your partner feel about your birth?
I will offer books and videos from my extensive library to help you prepare for birth. I can assist you in developing a birth plan and help you communicate your needs to your care providers. We will discuss comfort measures you may enjoy during labor and resources available to you after the baby is born.
During labor, I work to meet your needs while helping your partner participate in the process. I suggest position changes and employ comfort measures. I see that you and your partner are well hydrated and well fed.
I work to protect the mother's dignity, holding her up when she needs support, both mentally and physically.
I clean away any of the messy things that appear during birth and see to it that the ladies I serve give birth in an atmosphere of respect. I take photographs of you and your baby and help you birth with confidence and joy.
After a homebirth, I do the laundry and get the mother settled with her newborn. After a hospital birth, I stay with the couple until the mother and baby have been transferred to their room and feel comfortable.
I help you establish breastfeeding and meet with you after the birth when you are home with your baby to offer continued support.
